Red Clay Brick Basics
Red clay bricks are fired ceramic masonry units manufactured from natural clay and shale, kiln-fired at 900–1100°C. They are among the world's oldest building materials with proven 3,000+ year durability. Standard sizes vary by country: 230×110×75mm (India/Australia), 215×102×65mm (UK), 250×120×65mm (Continental Europe).
Properties: Compressive strength 5–40+ MPa, thermal conductivity λ = 0.60–0.80 W/m·K, density 1700–2100 kg/m³, water absorption 8–20%.
Brick Count Formula
Bricks = Wall Net Area ÷ (Brick L × Brick H) × Waste Factor
Standard 230×75mm face: 1/(0.230 × 0.075) = 57.97 ≈ 58 bricks/m² (half-brick wall). Full-brick wall = 116 bricks/m². Add 5–15% waste for cuts, corners, and breakage.
Coursing Guide
Course Height = Brick Height + Joint Thickness. For 75mm brick + 10mm joint = 85mm course. Target: adjust joint thickness (8–12mm) to achieve whole number of courses for given floor-to-floor height. This avoids awkward cuts at window/door heads.

FAQs
How many red clay bricks per m²?
Standard 230×110×75mm brick: 58 bricks/m² (half-brick, 110mm wall); 116 bricks/m² (full-brick, 230mm wall). UK 215×102×65mm: 71 bricks/m².
How much mortar per 1000 bricks?
Approximately 400–500 litres (0.4–0.5 m³) of mortar per 1,000 standard bricks with 10mm joints. 1:4 cement:sand mix: ~7 bags (50kg each) cement + 1.0 m³ sand per m³ mortar.
What is the U-value of a clay brick wall?
Single-leaf 230mm clay brick: U ≈ 1.70–2.40 W/m²K (λ = 0.60–0.80). Cavity wall with 100mm insulation: U ≈ 0.18–0.25 W/m²K. Single-leaf walls require additional insulation for energy compliance.
What is the optimal kiln temperature for red clay bricks?
900–1100°C for most clay types. Below 900°C → under-fired, lower strength. Above 1100°C → vitrification begins, possible warping. Tunnel kilns and Hoffmann kilns provide most consistent temperatures.
