Interlocking Block Basics

Interlocking concrete blocks have projections and recesses that mechanically lock adjacent blocks without mortar. Systems include: HYDRAFORM, Lego-type, hollow-core pinned, and compressed earth interlocking. Dry-stack construction is 30–50% faster than conventional masonry and eliminates mortar material, mixing, and curing.

Applications: retaining walls, boundary walls, paving, sea defence, landscaping, emergency housing. Standard compressive strength: 10–25 MPa. Density: 1000–2400 kg/m³.

Wall Stability Design

For dry-stack retaining walls: FOS_overturn = stabilising moment / overturning moment ≥ 1.5. FOS_slide = friction resistance / lateral force ≥ 1.5. For walls > 1m, add geogrid reinforcement layers at 300–600mm vertical intervals. In seismic zones, verify V_seismic ≤ μ × N (friction resistance).

FAQs

Can interlocking blocks be used for load-bearing walls?

Yes, when grouted cores with vertical rebar are used. Dry-stack alone is generally limited to garden/retaining walls and low-load partitions. Grouted systems can reach full masonry structural capacity.

What is the maximum height for dry-stack walls?

Without geogrid reinforcement: 1.0–1.5m max height. With geogrid (300mm intervals): 2.5–3.0m. For walls over 3m, consult a structural engineer.
