What are Hollow Concrete Blocks (CMU)?

Hollow Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) are machine-manufactured blocks with one or more hollow cores, reducing weight and material while maintaining structural performance. Standard hollow blocks are 25–55% open core by volume (ASTM C90).

The hollow cores can be filled with grout and reinforcement for structural walls, left hollow for lightweight partitions, or filled with insulation for improved thermal performance. They are used in foundations, retaining walls, partition walls, and load-bearing walls worldwide.

Hollow Block Mix Design

Standard mix ratio: 1:3:6 (cement:sand:aggregate), w/c = 0.45–0.55 for machine compaction. Provides approximately 15 MPa at 28 days, meeting ASTM C90 Type S requirements (min 13.1 MPa).

Load Capacity Formula

P = φ × 0.85 × f'm × Ae × (1 − (h/40t)³)

Where Ae = effective area accounting for void ratio, φ = 0.55, h = unsupported height, t = thickness. Maximum slenderness h/t ≤ 30.

Applications

  • Partition walls: Hollow, no reinforcement, standard mortar
  • Load-bearing walls: Grouted cores with reinforcement at specified spacing
  • Retaining walls: Grouted and reinforced, drainage fill behind
  • Basement walls: Below-grade, waterproofed, fully grouted

FAQs

What is the compressive strength of hollow concrete blocks?

Standard hollow blocks (ASTM C90 Type S) have minimum net area compressive strength of 13.1 MPa. Most commercial blocks achieve 15–25 MPa depending on mix design and manufacturing quality.

How many hollow blocks per m²?

Standard 400×200mm face blocks give 12.5 blocks per m² of wall. 390×190mm blocks give ~13.5 per m². Always add 8–12% waste for cuts and breakage.

Can hollow blocks be used for load-bearing walls?

Yes, when properly grouted and reinforced. Hollow block load-bearing walls are common in 1–6 storey construction. Consult a structural engineer for specific projects.

What mortar mix is used for hollow blocks?

1:4 cement:sand mortar (Type S) is standard for hollow block masonry. 10mm bed joints and perpend joints are typical. Thin-bed adhesive is not used with hollow blocks.

Formula: Mix Ratio = cement:sand:aggregate; w/c = 0.45–0.55; Yield = vol solids / compaction factor
